There are 5 Stages to achieve lasting behavior change. You can do it, but you must be prepared for a lot of hard work. The good news, however, is that this model has been proven to be scientifically successful.  Rest assured, you will not have to do this alone. The stages are in the following order:

Pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. There is also a 6th stage called relapse. This is included because occasional slip ups are always inevitable during the change process

The Stages of Change Model was first sparked in the mind of a young boy who had an alcoholic father.  He was heartbroken and helpless as he watched his father struggle in his efforts to stop drinking. Tragically his father later died as a result of his drinking. This filled the boy with a burning desire to learn how people that struggle with addiction can create transformational and lasting change in their lives. That little boy grew up to become doctor and renowned Clinical Psychologist, James Prochaska. It was James Prochaska who pioneered a path to lasting change for people who are willing to put in the work.
